If they achieve a minor accomplishment give them something small. Mismatching rewards can really confuse recipients and their peers, and ultimately it can do more harm than good.
3) Get Personal – Normally people tell you not to get personal. The opposite is true with recognition. It shows that the manager has enough interest to put in the time to find out about and remember your interests. Also, you actually get something for the person that they enjoy. After all, that’s the whole point.
4) Timing is Everything (almost) – Recognize team members shortly after the accomplishment. If there is too much time between accomplishment and recognition, the impact of the reward can be decreased dramatically. First of all, the person goes weeks or months without the much deserved positive feedback. Imagine what they are thinking? “Doesn’t my manager realize what I just did? Is he/she too busy to realize the importance of my accomplishment? I spent so much time on that. Why do I even bother?” Second, it implies that the manager didn’t see the recognition as being very important, which doesn’t send the correct message.
5) Be Specific – Don’t reward someone for being a wonderful employee. Their compensation should cover that anyway. Rather, point out exactly what they did to merit the recognition – completed xyz project, received a client letter, etc. Recognition should reinforce the behavior. So, be specific about the behavior that warranted the recognition.
6) Make it Public – People like to be recognized by their peers. It is further validation of their accomplishments. In addition, recognition is not just about reinforcing the behavior of the individual(s) being recognized; it also affects the behavior of others. Don’t miss out on this ancillary benefit.

Extrinsic motivators are not as effective as intrinsic ones, so being self-motivated gives you a better chance at succeeding. Motivation is intrinsic (internal); it comes from within based on personal interests, desires, and need for fulfillment. However, extrinsic (external) factors such as rewards, praise, and promotions also influence motivation.
It is an individual matter and one needs to know and understand the individuals that are to be motivated because most individuals have their own goals and aspirations.

Depending on how that date comes in can greatly accelerate, or impede, learning. Also, a process called "synaesthesia" is often referred to in learning theory. Specifically, an environment that induces relaxation was optimal for learning. The proper rhythms used alternatively, either from background music or sound, is also highly conducive to accelerated learning. Gee, kids might even like coming to school to learn! Want to learn to fly an airplane? Subdued lighting, soft background, trance inducing music and relaxation are a highly effective environment for learning and visualization.

Inspiration

I believe that there is a subtle and powerful distinction between motivation and inspiration.
Motivation can also happen on the reflexive flow, or self–to–self. Usually, motivation requires a kick in the butt from self or another, in order to reach a stated goal. How effective is motivation along the road to manifestation?
In politics, motivation is enforced by law. If you don’t pay your traffic ticket, your drivers license is suspended. Failure to pay your taxes results in a judgment against you, fines, and even jail. A cursory look at our society shows us that motivation by punishment doesn’t really prevent law breaking. Congress never reads the laws it passes).
Self–motivation is a little better, because it involves more free choice. Inspiration is entirely self–generated, and comes from within. “Why aren’t I passionate about my life?” If you examine your life you’ll see that the things you don’t like doing NEVER come from inspired decisions! The answer is that the state of being with which you created your job, and with which you continue to create your job, is not self–inspired!

A fractal is extremely sensitive to changes in the initial statement. Your initial decision or intention guides your actions and the way you feel, until another decision or intention is made. The difference between motivation and inspiration is very subtle, but also very powerful.
Exercise:
1) Write down an area of life that is not going as well as you’d like.
2) Examine your thoughts and your beliefs in this area. Write them down without editing or trying to make yourself look good.
3) Examine your list and decide if there is any way you could change these thoughts in a more positive direction.
4) Do 3) until you feel inspired.

Dreams, Goals, and Achievement

Many people call this the dream. Think of a goal as a dream with a date on it. Dreams can be a bit vague but goals have to be specific. What is a "weight"? My dream was not something like that; my dream was an image I had in my mind. That picture in my mind was my dream.
During my life I have moved through weights from around 5-1/2 pounds to 220 pounds. Next, I had to refine the dream into a specific goal. I had to do some analysis to find a goal that would produce an acceptable vision. Dreams and goals are important, but you won't achieve them without a plan. I created a goal chart to track my progress on a monthly basis. And, I set an end date for achieving the goal. I'd had the dream before, and I'd had goals before. As time went on, I could look at my progress and decide whether the plan was working and whether I was really executing the plan. Well, I lost over half of what my goal was. The goal is established by defining the dream with numbers that are measurable.

What’s holding you back?

It’s too difficult at my age.

People will think I’m ‘too big for my boots’.
I don’t know how to begin.
Who am I? There are other people far more qualified.
I don’t have enough self-confidence
It’s all right to be frightened.
Fear, concern, anxiety are natural feelings so don’t expect to be entering a new venture without some pretty intense emotions. You have to decide whether you’re going to give them more room in your head than the excitement, anticipation and joy that are equally present. If you listen too much to the anxious feelings, they’ll tell you to stop before you begin. Get an image in your head of you at your most successful and let her have more room than the ‘little’ you that will keep you small if you let her. Draw a self-portrait of your successful self. Start a scrapbook and put her on page one. One of my scrapbooks is filled with cartoons, my own drawings (really bad ones I might add!), poetry (mine and others), clippings from magazines and newspapers, anything that helped me define my dream.
Identify the skills you already have.
Being a homemaker requires courage, tenacity, planning, determination and flexibility. All those qualities are also required for any new venture. For one month keep a journal in your scrapbook of everything you do in your daily life and the qualities and skills you use to do them. Then imagine yourself in your new activity and list the skills you’ll need, marking a tick next to the ones you already have. In some cases you may need retraining (studying to be a counsellor, for instance), but in most cases I have found that people already have the skills and qualities they’ll need for a new vocation.
Get a support structure in place before you begin.
Two is a support group. Get more if you can and schedule regular weekly meetings. They need only last an hour. Part of their purpose is to help keep you on track. At the beginning tell your support group your long-term aspirations and at least one short-term goal per week. Other people’s jobs are to encourage, brainstorm new ideas and tell you you are wonderful. This is no joke. When the going gets difficult, you
need to have people on your side whatever happens. A few good words from someone you trust can brighten anyone’s day. Make sure you do not include anyone who will tell you why your ideas won’t work. It’s fine to have someone point out some of the pitfalls, but you do not need negativity – it just feeds the little you.
Dream with your feet on the ground.
Be realistic. You may dream of being a ballet dancer at 45, but it’s mighty unlikely to happen. However, you could get involved in set design, costume-making or any number of related areas. One of the problems that people with impossible dreams encounter is that they make them so big, that not only is it unlikely they’ll be able to achieve them, it is equally likely that they will be the best excuse never to begin. I’m a great believer in impossible dreams (I have them myself!), but make sure they can be broken down into ‘bite-size’ chunks, so that you can see a beginning, middle and end to each chunk. If my dream is to be a Booker prize winner I can stay in my head autographing first editions and never start the first page. Or I can keep a journal every day, send a short piece into the parish newsletter and write letters to the editor of my favourite magazine as a way of practising my skills as a writer.
Start networking. You know more people than you think.
Go through your address book and see if there’s anyone amongst your current friends, relatives and acquaintances who knows something about the area you are interested in. Don’t think in terms of what they can do, rather what or who they know. Identify who’s already doing what you want to do and ask to pick their brains. It may seem quite a bold thing to ask but, in my experience, people are usually quite generous about telling others what they know (good for their ego too) and will give not only useful pointers but will alert you of pitfalls as well.
Learn to sell yourself.
If you don’t think you have something to offer, why should anyone else? You don’t have to wave a banner to sell yourself, but self-deprecation won’t do it either. An exercise to do with your support group is to imagine yourself as a product. What’s special about you the product? Why would someone want to ‘buy’ this product? Who are your ‘customers’? How will you reach them? Odd questions to ask yourself, but they will put a new slant on looking at yourself more objectively. Then you need to create a Marketing Plan to launch this new product onto the world.

I know this sounds obvious, but the number of people I’ve met who have huge dreams and no plans astonishes me. The best way to make a plan that I know is to start with your end point and work backwards. Begin with your goal and think of what would have happened just before you reached it, then what would have happened just before that, and so on till you reach the present day. Draw a graph of what needs to happen when and be clear about the milestones – those key elements that must be in place for your plan to work well. Put people’s names next to the milestones. And most important of all, make sure you create a budget so you know what resources you’ll have to call upon at each stage.
A plan should make you feel supported, secure and freed up. If it feels like a burden, you’ve got the wrong plan.
